Bought at Whole Foods, Brentwood, Missouri for $8 (normally ~$9). Drank at room temperature.
Z: Sorry, K, I took this one down. It was quite excellent and my first Sirah (although I hear that Shiraz and Sirah are awfully close). It was really good, and if I see it again I am going to pick it up. Unfortunately I don't remember any nuances having written this one quite a few days after the bottle was killed. Good excuse to buy another.

Mattie's Perch Shiraz (Year Unknown)
Bought at Schnuck's in Florissant, Missouri for about $6. Drank at room temperature.
Z: Very nice. It does have a nice note of caramel. Good spiciness. Highly recommended.
K: My favorite shiraz yet!

Four Emus Shiraz 2003
Bought at Schnuck's in Florissant, Missouri for $6-8. Drank at room temperature.
Z: Took a while to open up; longer than I expected. It was very fruity before it opened, but when it did it was very woody and the spiciness came out a bit more. I enjoyed it all the way through, but next time I would give it a lot longer time to drink it after opening it up.
K: I didn't like it that much for a shiraz.

Wyalla Cove Shiraz 2003
Bought at Aldi in Maplewood, Missouri for $5. Drank at room temperature.
Z: For $5 this was a great shiraz. It wasn't as complex as some of the other shiraz wines we have tried, but it hit the basics really well. It had a nice berry flavor, a nice hit of spice, and a little warmness in its tannins. The alcohol was also not as overwhelming as one may find in cheap wines. For a wine to open with pizza night, you can't beat this one.
K: Really, really good.

Rocky Gully Shiraz 2005
Bought at Whole Foods Market in Brentwood, Missouri for around $18. The wine is an actual mix of 95% shiraz, and 5% viognier (a white grape known for its floral quialities). Drank at room temperature about 20 minutes after the bottle was opened.
Z: I didn't really like it. It was more of a merlot type taste than the spicy bite of shiraz. I also thought that the viognier would add a bit more sweetness not commonly found in a shiraz. The alcohol was also a bit strong in comparison to the tastes.
K: Didn't like it either.

Clean Slate Riesling 2006
Bought at Whole Foods Market in Brentwood, Missouri for around $15.00. Drank the next day at room temperature. Bought it because it won an award beating out 120+ other Rieslings.
Z: I normally don't like Rieslings because (1) they are white and (2) they are sweet. This wine immediately rose to the top of my white wine list. The sweetness was hidden in a nice hit of dry, and it had a very clean, fruity aftertaste. I would definitely recommend this wine.
K: I like it, and that is good enough for me.
Edit: Drank the next day after beung refrigerated overnight, was much, much sweeter and lost most of its subtle qualities.

Pop the Cork
We decided to keep a wine journal, and what better way to do it than to share it the world? It is interesting that this wine that will start this journal had a screw top...
Hope you enjoy our once in awhile reviews, and I hope we remember this blog when we buy more wine!
